When the beginning of June rolled around, New Jersey officially felt like summer! I suddenly found that my girls needed some summer pajamas so I decided to make the pattern available to my lovely readers! The pattern is for sizes 2T and 4T and includes shorts and shirt pieces for both sizes. The 2T is sized for 20.5″ chest, 19.5″ waist, and 20.5″ hips at 36″ tall. The 4T is sized for 22.5″ chest, 21.5″ waist, 22.5″ hips at 41″ tall.

Be sure to print with 100% scaling and with auto portrait OFF. These are “no-trim” pages that you can learn more about here!
If you’d made a t-shirt or shorts before, these are so easy to whip up! I used some very nice fabric from EuroGirls to make mix and match pieces so my girls got two pairs each. Sadly, my youngest does not cooperate when I try to take pictures of her, but my oldest loves to model for the camera!
You’ll need 1 yd of cotton lycra knit fabric preferably with 4 way stretch and 1″ no roll elastic. You will cut 18″ of the elastic for 2T and 19″ of the elastic for the 4T size. You’ll also need basic sewing tools and a sewing machine or serger. You will also cut a strip 1.75″ by 12.75″ for the 2T neck binding and a strip 1.75″ by 13.5″ for the 4T neck binding.
The seam allowance is included in the pattern pieces and is 3/8″ (1 cm).
To construct the shirt:
Step 1: Align the front and back pieces at the shoulders and pin if desired. Serge both shoulders.
Step 2: Place the short ends of the neck binding right sides together and serge with a 1/4” (6mm) seam allowance. Fold the neck binding wrong sides together with raw edges aligned. Fold the binding in half at the seam to find the center front then mark with a pin or marking utensil. Find the sides by aligning the center front and back, then mark.
Step 3: Find the center of the front and back neckline, mark. Using the same steps above, find the sides, then mark. Place the neck binding on the right side of the neckline, aligning all four marks, pin. Stretch the binding as you serge around the neckline so that it aligns with the shirt. Be sure to stretch the neck binding and not the shirt. Press the seam down.
Step 4: Place one sleeve right sides together with the arm opening. Pin the sleeve along the opening, then serge. Repeat with the second sleeve.
Step 5: Place the side seam of the sleeve and shirt right sides together. Pin and sew the entire seam. Repeat with the second side.
Step 6: If desired, finish the bottom hem and sleeve hems. Fold the hem of the shirt up 1/2″ and cover stitch, zigzag, or stretch stitch the raw edge.
To construct the shorts:
Step 1: Place one front and one back piece right sides together at the side seams, pin then sew. Align the inseams, pin then sew.
Repeat with the second set of leg pieces.
Step 2: Place one leg inside the other right sides together with the crotch aligned. Pin, then sew around the crotch. Reinforce with a second layer of stitches.
Step 3: Overlap the ends of the elastic 1″ and sew an “N” on the overlap. Find the center front and sides, mark.
Step 4: Pin the center back of the elastic to the back seam, then align the other marks with the remaining seams.
Step 5: Use the zigzag stitch to attach the elastic around the top of the pants, stretching the elastic only as you sew around it.
Step 6: Fold the elastic down towards the wrong side, pin if necessary. Use the zigzag stitch or stretch stitch to secure the fold around the waist.
Step 7: If desired, finish the bottom hem of the legs with a serger or zigzag stitch, then fold the hem up 1/2”. Sew around the hem with a stretch stitch, double needle, or cover stitch machine. Repeat with the second leg.
